Would you believe that SAFECON 2018 hosted by Indiana State University is right around the corner? SAFECON will kick off with the General Contestant Briefing on April 30th, 2018. I’d like to take a moment and introduce myself and the senior judging staff and cover a few initial housekeeping items.
My name is Jared Testa and I have the pleasure of serving as your Chief Judge for SAFECON 2018. My first exposure to NIFA was as a contestant at SAFECON 1998 in Salina, KS. Since then I’ve been a contestant, coach, advisor, judge, and currently serve as a member-at-large on the NIFA Council. For my day job, I fly as a first officer on an Avro RJ85 conducting wildland firefighting missions. I can be reached via email at email@example.com.
SAFECON 2018 Associate Chief Judge is Andrew Ross. Andrew has been involved with NIFA since 2005 as a competitor, coach, judge and currently serving as the Region 8 Representative on the NIFA Council. Currently, Andrew is a Line Check Airman on the EMB-145 out of Chicago for Envoy, where he has worked for 7 years. Andrew can be reached by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Responsible for ensuring quality across the board with the judging staff, the NIFA Senior Chief Judge is Erich Hess. Erich has been attending SAFECON’s since 1997 and has been a volunteer judge since 2001. Erich serves as a member-at-large on the NIFA Council. When not volunteering for NIFA, Erich serves as a B737 First Officer for United Airlines. Erich can be reached by email at email@example.com.
One quick note about the emails listed above. I’m certain many of you have other personal email addresses for the judging staff. In an effort to ensure quick and reliable communications during the event, please use the official nifa.aero email addresses to contact your senior judging staff.
As we move closer to SAFECON, please keep your eyes on the SAFECON website at safecon.nifa.aero. The judging staff will be posting critical updates to this site as details are finalized approaching competition. Let me cover some additional housekeeping items for each event:
Computer Accuracy, Aircraft Recognition, Simulated Comprehensive Aircraft Navigation: As standard, each competing school will be allowed to enter 5 contestants in each of these events.
Aircraft Preflight Inspection: Each school may enter two contestants. The preflight aircraft will be a 2006 Diamond DA-20-C1, N61WR.
Ground Trainer: Each school may enter two contestants. The event will be conducted using a Frasca 141 with standard instrumentation.
CRM/LOFT: Each school may enter one team of two contestants, a pilot flying and a pilot monitoring. The simulator for this event will be a King-Air B200. The CRM/LOFT event judges are working diligently with the representatives from Indiana State and you should be receiving more information about the simulator soon.
Message/Drop: Each school may enter 5 teams of two contestants each, a pilot and a dropmaster.
IFR Simulated Flight Event: Each school may enter 1 contestant. The event will be conducted using a Frasca 172 flight training device provided by Frasca International.
Power Off and Short Field Landings: Each school may enter 5 contestants in each event. Landing heat sheets are being developed and will be available at SAFECON. Each contestant will conduct two landings, with both being scored to determine the final ranking. There will NOT be a practice landing, or best two-of-three scenario.
Navigation Event: Each school should have 3 teams of two contestants each prepared to conduct the Navigation event. As we’ve stated in the past, our goal is to conduct three rounds of the event, but often weather or other logistical issues may prevent that from taking place. We’ve have good success in recent years and have finished the whole event, let’s hope for good weather and continuing that trend. A large part of that success is in the preparation of the heat sheet and plan for the event, we can’t do that without information from you. In that regard, it’s imperative that you complete the form at safecon.nifa.aero prior to April 17th, 2018 . You can find the form by clicking “Events” in the menu at the top, then clicking “Navigation”.
